This is my personal submission to Love Studies!

As a young teenager, I rarely took solace in the fact that I was thin. I was severely underweight & I got bullied quite a lot because of it. It wasn’t until I started listening to post-feminist bands like Bikini Kill, Hole, Garbage, Lunachicks & Julliette Lewis that I realised that I didn’t owe my body to anybody but myself! I was so hung up on comparing myself to the other girls in my year, the curvy, tanned, blonde bombshells that ruled the school, that I didn’t take the time out to study my body & what I like/disliked about it.

As I turned into a young woman, I became more & more confident in myself by admiring my body in the mirror, rather than hiding it away. I started watching movies like Tank Girl, Batman & X-Men and saw how beautiful and confident the women were portrayed, and that’s what I aimed to be!

Also, Tumblr has been a big help in my self-love journey. It’s here that I saw people like Tahlalalalia, Jessica Luxury, Raine, Sheena Le Strange, Devilette & many others, women of ALL different body types, and they made me have faith that I could become the confident young lady I had always aspired to be!
